An autosomal recessive hereditary disease affecting young Holstein calves. Homozygous individuals die from extreme susceptibility to infection, caused by an inability of leukocytes to pass from the blood stream into infected tissue. This inability is due to the lack of beta-2 integrin adhesion protein on the surface of the white blood cells due to two point mutations in the CD18 gene.

Motifs in DNA- and RNA-binding proteins whose amino acids are folded into a single structural unit around a zinc atom. In the classic zinc finger, one zinc atom is bound to two cysteines and two histidines. In between the cysteines and histidines are 12 residues which form a DNA binding fingertip. By variations in the composition of the sequences in the fingertip and the number and spacing of tandem repeats of the motif, zinc fingers can form a large number of different sequence specific binding sites.

A complex disorder involving abiotic and biotic stresses on a forest stand that results in a slow, progressive decrease in growth with loss of health and vigor. Mortality is common. However, affected trees may recover once the stresses are removed. Natural factors (hurricanes, floods, fires, drought, pests, etc.) as well as human activity (deforestation and forest degradation) are involved.
