Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster
The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster is a series of equipment failures, nuclear meltdowns, and releases of radioactive materials at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, following a 9.0 earthquake and tsunami on 11 March 2011. The catastrophe made the Fukushima Daiichi power plant famous as the site of one of the worst nuclear accidents we've ever known.
In September 2012 Japan called for the phasing out of nuclear power, as it overhauls its energy policy in the wake of the devastation of the Fukushima meltdown.
