The Three Gorges Dam is currently the largest hydroelectric dam in the world. The water depth in the dam's 300 kilometre long reservoir along the Yangtze river, China's longest, is 175 metres (577 feet.) The dam is designed to control floods and generate enough electricity to power the entire city of Shanghai.
