También conocido como la corriente Perú, esta corriente marina fluye hacia el norte a lo largo del lado occidental de América del Sur, en el mar de Chile y Perú. Hay considerable afloramiento de las aguas más frías del subsuelo debido a los vientos del sur prevalecientes. El clima dominante en esta área incluyen la niebla costera y las nubes bajas. La presencia o ausencia de esta corriente es una parte vital del fenómeno climático conocido como El Niño.
